Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ip_push_pending_frames of the component IP ID Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The ip_push_pending_frames function in Linux 2.4.x and 2.6.x before 2.6.16 increments the IP ID field when sending a RST after receiving unsolicited TCP SYN-ACK packets, which allows remote attackers to conduct an Idle Scan (nmap -sI) attack, which bypasses intended protections against such attacks.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2006. The weakness was shared 03/28/2006 by Marco Ivaldi (Raptor) (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1242 since 03/15/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22135 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2006:0437)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117668 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0437)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.16.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25307), Tenable (22135), SecurityFocus (BID 17109†), OSVDB (24137†) and Secunia (SA19402†). The entries VDB-2074, VDB-2172, VDB-29289 and VDB-29029 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
