Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.5 on Intel EM64T SYSRET input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.5 on Intel EM64T. Impacted is an unknown function. The manipulation of the argument SYSRET results in input validation. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2006-0744. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.5 on Intel EM64T (Operating System). Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument SYSRET with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Linux kernel before 2.6.16.5 does not properly handle uncanonical return addresses on Intel EM64T CPUs, which reports an exception in the SYSRET instead of the next instruction, which causes the kernel exception handler to run on the user stack with the wrong GS.

The bug was discovered 04/12/2006. The weakness was disclosed 04/17/2006 by Ernie Petrides and Asit B. Mallick with Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-0744 since 02/17/2006. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21253 (Fedora Core 4 : kernel-2.6.16-1.2096_FC4 (2006-423)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117668 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0437)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25869), Tenable (21253), SecurityFocus (BID 17541†), OSVDB (24639†) and Secunia (SA21498†). The entries VDB-2074, VDB-2114, VDB-2130 and VDB-29029 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
