A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.1 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component XUL History Handler. Mozilla Firefox 1.5 before 1.5.0.2 and SeaMonkey before 1.0.1 causes certain windows to become translucent due to an interaction between XUL content windows and the history mechanism, which might allow user-assisted remote attackers to trick users into executing arbitrary code.
The weakness was released 04/13/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-17 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1725 since 04/12/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22588 (Debian DSA-1046-1 : mozilla - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115354 (Mozilla SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
