A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is the function eval of the component Javascript XML Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Mozilla Firefox 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary Javascript into other sites by (1) "using a modal alert to suspend an event handler while a new page is being loaded", (2) using eval(), and using certain variants involving (3) "new Script;" and (4) using window.__proto__ to extend eval, aka "cross-site JavaScript injection".
The weakness was released 04/13/2006 by shutdown as MFSA2006-14 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1741 since 04/12/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
