A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function InstallTrigger.install. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The CSS border-rendering code in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via certain Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) that causes an out-of-bounds array write and buffer overflow.

The weakness was presented 04/13/2006 by Bob Clary (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-14 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1739 since 04/12/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
