A vulnerability has been found in phpMyAdmin up to 2.8.0.3 (Database Administration Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file sql.php. The manipulation of the argument sql_query with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in sql.php in phpMyAdmin 2.7.0-pl1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the sql_query parameter.
The weakness was presented 04/17/2006 by p0w3r (Website). The advisory is shared at phpmyadmin.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1803 since 04/17/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:sql.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
