Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17 sysfs/file.c fill_write_buffer memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel. The impacted element is the function fill_write_buffer of the file sysfs/file.c. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1055. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function fill_write_buffer of the file sysfs/file.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The fill_write_buffer function in sysfs/file.c in Linux kernel 2.6.12 up to versions before 2.6.17-rc1 does not zero terminate a buffer when a length of PAGE_SIZE or more is requested, which might allow local users to cause a denial of service (crash) by causing an out-of-bounds read.

The bug was discovered 03/31/2006. The weakness was published 04/07/2006 by Al Viro (Website). The advisory is available at svn.debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-1055 since 03/07/2006. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 292 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21253 (Fedora Core 4 : kernel-2.6.16-1.2096_FC4 (2006-423)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25693), Tenable (21253), SecurityFocus (BID 17402†), OSVDB (24443†) and Secunia (SA19495†). Similar entry is available at VDB-2172. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
