Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Xscreensaver. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Temp File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Xscreensaver before 4.15 creates temporary files insecurely in (1) driver/passwd-kerberos.c, (2) driver/xscreensaver-getimage-video, (3) driver/xscreensaver.kss.in, and the (4) vidwhacker and (5) webcollage screensavers, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.
The bug was discovered 10/24/2003. The weakness was published 12/31/2003 with SuSE as Bug 182286 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-1294 since 02/28/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 68 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21902 (CentOS 3 : xscreensaver (CESA-2006:0498)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117715 (CentOS Security Update for XScreenSaver (CESA-2006:0498)).
Upgrading to version 4.15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13904), Tenable (21902), SecurityFocus (BID 9125†), OSVDB (25743†) and Secunia (SA20224†). Similar entries are available at VDB-21226 and VDB-23528. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
