A vulnerability was found in Phorum 3.4/3.4.1/3.4.2 (Forum Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file download.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in download.php in Phorum 3.4 through 3.4.2 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files.
The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2003 with ProCheckUp (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-1465 since 10/24/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
By approaching the search of inurl:download.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11231 (Phorum Download File Disclosure Vulnerability).
