Linux Kernel up to 6.0.10 WILC1000 Wireless Driver cfg80211.c wilc_wfi_cfg_parse_ch_attr heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.10. The affected element is the function wilc_wfi_cfg_parse_ch_attr of the file drivers/net/wireless/microchip/wilc1000/cfg80211.c of the component WILC1000 Wireless Driver. Such manipulation leads to heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2022-47518. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.10 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function wilc_wfi_cfg_parse_ch_attr of the file drivers/net/wireless/microchip/wilc1000/cfg80211.c of the component WILC1000 Wireless Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 6.0.11. Missing validation of the number of channels in drivers/net/wireless/microchip/wilc1000/cfg80211.c in the WILC1000 wireless driver can trigger a heap-based buffer overflow when copying the list of operating channels from Wi-Fi management frames.

The weakness was published 12/18/2022. The advisory is shared for download at lore.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-47518 since 12/18/2022. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236642 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0042: cloud-kernel bugfix, enhancement and (ALINUX3-SA-2023:0042)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0cdfa9e6f0915e3d243e2393bfa8a22e12d553b0 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
