A vulnerability classified as critical was found in wu-ftpd 2.5.0/2.6.0/2.6.1/2.6.2 (File Transfer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function fb_realpath. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 07/31/2003 by Wojciech Purczynski and Janusz Niewiadomski (intuit) with iSEC Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared at isec.pl. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0466 since 06/26/2003. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It is possible to download the exploit at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16907 (HP-UX PHNE_29462 : s700_800 11.22 ftpd(1M) and ftp(1) patch), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27200 (WU-FTPD FB_RealPath Off-By-One Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.wu-ftpd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2392. In this case the pattern RETR is used for detection.
