The (1) instdbmsrv and (2) instlserver programs in SAP DB Development Tools 7.x trust the user-provided INSTROOT environment variable as a path when assigning setuid permissions to the lserver program, which allows local users to gain root privileges via a modified INSTROOT that points to a malicious dbmsrv or lserver program.

The weakness was disclosed 04/15/2004 with Secure Network Operations, Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1033 since 03/15/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx.
