Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function arch_get_unmapped_area of the file mmap.c of the component Address Space Layout Randomization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The arch_get_unmapped_area function in mmap.c in the PaX patches for Linux kernel 2.6, when Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) is enabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via unknown attack vectors.
The weakness was released 05/02/2004 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1983. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14535 (GLSA-200407-02 : Linux Kernel: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16037), Exploit-DB (24078), Tenable (14535), SecurityFocus (BID 10264†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28448†).
