Details
A vulnerability was found in LBL tcpdump 3.8.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function isakmp_id_print. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer underflow in the isakmp_id_print for TCPDUMP 3.8.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via an ISAKMP packet with an Identification payload with a length that becomes less than 8 during byte order conversion, which causes an out-of-bounds read, as demonstrated by the Striker ISAKMP Protocol Test Suite.
The bug was discovered 03/30/2004. The weakness was presented 03/31/2004 with Rapid7 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0184 since 03/02/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15315 (Debian DSA-478-1 : tcpdump - denial of service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2486.
