Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle Application Server Web Cache 9.0.0.4.0/9.0.2.3.0/9.0.3.1.0/9.0.4.0.0 (Application Server Software). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component HTTP Request Method Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Oracle 9i Application Server Web Cache 9.0.4.0.0, 9.0.3.1.0, 9.0.2.3.0, and 9.0.0.4.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long HTTP request method header to the Web Cache listener. NOTE: due to the vagueness of the Oracle advisory, it is not clear whether there are additional issues besides this overflow, although the advisory alludes to multiple "vulnerabilities."
The weakness was disclosed 03/15/2004 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0385 since 04/06/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/12/2025).
