Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer and RealOne (Multimedia Player Software) (version now known). Affected is some unknown processing of the component RT3 Plugin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the RT3 plugin, as used in RealPlayer 8, RealOne Player, RealOne Player 10 beta, and RealOne Player Enterprise, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed .R3T file.
The bug was discovered 02/04/2004. The weakness was presented 03/07/2004 by Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is shared for download at service.real.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0387 since 04/09/2004. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17590 (RHEL 3 : realplayer (RHSA-2005:299)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
