IBM AIX 4.3.3/5.1/5.2 LVM memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in IBM AIX 4.3.3/5.1/5.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component LVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in LVM for AIX 5.1 and 5.2 allow local users to gain privileges via the (1) putlvcb or (2) getlvcb commands.

The issue has been introduced in 09/01/1999. The weakness was released 03/22/2004 by xfocus (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0544 since 06/08/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1664 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14622 (AIX 5.1 : IY55681), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 5.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18317), Exploit-DB (23840), Tenable (14622), SecurityFocus (BID 9905†) and OSVDB (4392†).
