The DeviceIoControl function in the Norton Device Driver (NAVAP.sys) in Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2002 allows local users to gain privileges by overwriting memory locations via certain control codes (aka "Device Driver Attack").

The weakness was disclosed 07/28/2003 by Lord YuP with Qualys Security Research Team (Website). The advisory is available at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-1310 since 11/30/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
