The DeviceIoControl function in the Norton Device Driver (NAVAP.sys) in Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2002 allows local users to gain privileges by overwriting memory locations via certain control codes (aka "Device Driver Attack").
The weakness was disclosed 07/28/2003 by Lord YuP with Qualys Security Research Team (Website). The advisory is available at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-1310 since 11/30/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38324 (Symantec Norton AntiVirus Device Driver Memory Overwrite Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 4.0.146.029 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityresponse.symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
