The DeviceIoControl function in the Norton Device Driver (NAVAP.sys) in Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2002 allows local users to gain privileges by overwriting memory locations via certain control codes (aka "Device Driver Attack").

The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2003 by Lord YuP with sEC-Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sec-labs.hack.pl. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-1310 since 11/30/2006. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
