Details
A vulnerability has been found in Kubernetes kube-apiserver (Virtualization Software) (version unknown) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Users authorized to list or watch one type of namespaced custom resource cluster-wide can read custom resources of a different type in the same API group without authorization. Clusters are impacted by this vulnerability if all of the following are true: 1. There are 2+ CustomResourceDefinitions sharing the same API group 2. Users have cluster-wide list or watch authorization on one of those custom resources. 3. The same users are not authorized to read another custom resource in the same API group.
The weakness was shared 03/01/2023 as 113756. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-3162 since 09/08/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211324 (Fedora 37 : kubernetes (2022-8647729ff8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (211324) and EUVD (EUVD-2023-0823). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
