Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Trolltech Qt 3.3.3. Affected is the function read_dib of the file qimage.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the BMP image format parser for the QT library (qt3) before 3.3.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 07/23/2004. The weakness was published 08/18/2004 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared for download at scary.beasts.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0691 since 07/13/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by infamous41md and been published 3 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at scary.beasts.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14349 (Fedora Core 2 : qt-3.3.3-0.1 (2004-271)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115320 (Linux QT Library Multiple Heap Overflow and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17040), Exploit-DB (408), Tenable (14349), SecurityFocus (BID 10977†) and OSVDB (9026†). Similar entries are available at VDB-22261 and VDB-22262. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
