Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in KDE 3.2.1. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file /tmp of the component DCOPServer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The DCOPServer in KDE 3.2.3 and earlier allows local users to gain unauthorized access via a symlink attack on DCOP files in the /tmp directory.
The bug was discovered 08/11/2004. The weakness was shared 09/28/2004 by LINUX with Debian as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0690 since 07/13/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24307 (FreeBSD : kdelibs insecure temporary file handling (603fe36d-ec9d-11d8-b913-000c41e2cdad)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16962), Tenable (24307), SecurityFocus (BID 10924†), OSVDB (8590†) and Secunia (SA12276†). The entry VDB-784 is related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
