MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.3.4 BER Encoding asn1buf_skiptail infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.3.4. Impacted is the function asn1buf_skiptail of the component BER Encoding Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to infinite loop. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2004-0644. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.3.4 (Network Authentication Software). This vulnerability affects the function asn1buf_skiptail of the component BER Encoding Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The asn1buf_skiptail function in the ASN.1 decoder library for MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.2.2 through 1.3.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a certain BER encoding.

The weakness was presented 09/28/2004 by Nico Williams (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0644. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14594 (FreeBSD : krb5 -- ASN.1 decoder denial-of-service vulnerability (86)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38387 (Sun Solaris KDC Daemon and Kerberos V5 Libraries Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17160), Tenable (14594), SecurityFocus (BID 11079†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-5294†). See VDB-815, VDB-818 and VDB-817 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
