A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.3.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function krb5_rd_cred. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Double free vulnerability in the krb5_rd_cred function for MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.3.1 and earlier may allow local users to execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 08/31/2004. The weakness was disclosed 08/31/2004 by Marc Horowitz with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Website). The advisory is shared at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0643 since 07/08/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14673 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : krb5 (MDKSA-2004:088)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38387 (Sun Solaris KDC Daemon and Kerberos V5 Libraries Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
