Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.4 TCP/IP Networking memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.4 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component TCP/IP Networking. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The TCP/IP Networking component in Mac OS X before 10.3.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory and resource consumption) via a "Rose Attack" that involves sending a subset of small IP fragments that do not form a complete, larger packet.

The weakness was shared 11/23/2004 with Apple (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at digital.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0744. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22172 (HP-UX PHNE_34131 : HP-UX running TCP/IP Remote Denial of Service (DoS) (HPSBUX02087 SSRT4728 rev.5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115355 (HP-UX running TCP/IP Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02087)).

Upgrading to version 10.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16946), Tenable (22172), SecurityFocus (BID 10904†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28455†). The entries VDB-859, VDB-860 and VDB-22498 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
