Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Packet Fragmentation Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.04, B.11.11, and B.11.23 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a "Rose Attack" that involves sending a subset of small IP fragments that do not form a complete, larger packet.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2005. The weakness was published 10/01/2004 by Gandalf The White (DiGiT) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at digital.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-4316 since 12/17/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at digital.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1679 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17400 (HP-UX PHKL_31500 : s700_800 11.23 Sept04 base patch), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115355 (HP-UX running TCP/IP Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02087)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24832), Tenable (17400), SecurityFocus (BID 11258†), OSVDB (10456†) and Secunia (SA12670†). Similar entries are available at VDB-859 and VDB-22499. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
