A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IBM AIX up to 5.3 L (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Trusted Execution. The manipulation of the argument environment with an unknown input leads to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. Untrusted execution path vulnerability in the diag commands (1) lsmcode, (2) diag_exec, (3) invscout, and (4) invscoutd in AIX 5.1 through 5.3 allows local users to execute arbitrary programs by modifying the DIAGNOSTICS environment variable to point to a malicious Dctrl program.
The issue has been introduced in 05/01/2001. The weakness was shared 12/20/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1329 since 01/06/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1329 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
