A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.1/5.2/5.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function setlocale of the file libc.a. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Untrusted search path vulnerability in update_flash for IBM AIX 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 allows local users to execute arbitrary commands via unknown vectors involving lsmcode and possibly other commands.

The issue has been introduced in 05/01/2001. The weakness was disclosed 05/29/2006 with IBM (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2647 since 05/30/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1854 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18620), SecurityFocus (BID 18114†), OSVDB (25805†), Secunia (SA20325†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1016166†).
