Details
A vulnerability was found in musl libc up to 1.0.3/1.1.1. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __dn_expand of the file network/dn_expand.c of the component DNS Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the __dn_expand function in network/dn_expand.c in musl libc 1.1x before 1.1.2 and 0.9.13 through 1.0.3 allow remote attackers to (1) have unspecified impact via an invalid name length in a DNS response or (2) cause a denial of service (crash) via an invalid name length in a DNS response, related to an infinite loop with no output.
The weakness was published 04/22/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at git.musl-libc.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3484 since 05/14/2014.
