A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in TigerVNC up to 1.3.0. This issue affects the function ZRLE_DECODE of the file common/rfb/zrleDecode.h. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in the ZRLE_DECODE function in common/rfb/zrleDecode.h in TigerVNC before 1.3.1, when NDEBUG is enabled, allow remote VNC servers to cause a denial of service (vncviewer crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to screen image rendering.
The weakness was shared 04/22/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0011 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 1.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
