YPOPs! up to 0.4 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in YPOPs! up to 0.4. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in YPOPs! (aka YahooPOPS) 0.4 through 0.6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long (1) POP3 USER command or (2) SMTP request.

The bug was discovered 09/22/2004. The weakness was shared 09/27/2004 by Nima Majidi with Hat-Squad (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hat-squad.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1558 since 02/20/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74185 (YahooPOPS! Multiple Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8705. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4170.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17518), Exploit-DB (16818), SecurityFocus (BID 11256†), OSVDB (10366†) and Secunia (SA12660†). The entry VDB-82169 is related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
