Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown function of the component DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Light ActiveX. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 and 6 SP1 and earlier allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by instantiating certain COM objects from Wmm2fxa.dll as ActiveX controls including (1) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect1Input, (2) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect1Input.1, (3) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect2Inputs, (4) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect2Inputs.1, (5) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffectInplace1Input, and (6) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffectInplace1Input.1, which causes memory corruption during garbage collection.
The weakness was shared 06/13/2006 by Andreas Sandblad as MS06-021 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1303 since 03/20/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
