A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4/6 SP1 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality in the library mshtml.dll of the component HTML Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 and 6 SP1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted UTF-8 encoded HTML that results in size discrepancies during conversion to Unicode, aka "HTML Decoding Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 06/13/2006 by Andreas Sandblad with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MS06-021 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-2382 since 05/15/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21685 (MS06-021: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100035 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer Missing (MS06-021)).
Applying the patch MS06-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4440.
