Activestate Activeperl up to 5.8 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Activestate Activeperl up to 5.8. It has been classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects unknown code. This manipulation causes stack-based overflow. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2004-2022. In addition, an exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Activestate Activeperl up to 5.8 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

ActivePerl 5.8.x and others, and Larry Wall s Perl 5.6.1 and others, when running on Windows systems, allows attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long argument to the system command, which leads to a stack-based buffer overflow. NOTE: it is unclear whether this bug is in Perl or the OS API that is used by Perl.

The weakness was presented 12/31/2004 by Oliver Karow (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-2022 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16169), Exploit-DB (24128) and SecurityFocus (BID 10375†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
