Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 8 FP12 (Database Software). This affects an unknown part. The manipulation as part of a CONNECT Request leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the TCP/IP listener in IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) before 8.1 FixPak 12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long MGRLVLLS message inside of an EXCSAT message when establishing a connection.
The bug was discovered 04/18/2006. The weakness was presented 06/14/2006 by Amichai Shulman, Ohad Atia and Elad Tabak with Imperva (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3066 since 06/19/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 57 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23935 (IBM DB2 < 8.1 FixPak 12 EXCSAT Long MGRLVLLS Message Remote DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19209 (IBM DB2 Universal Database Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-1.ibm.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (23935), SecurityFocus (BID 18428†), OSVDB (29861†) and Secunia (SA20579†).
