AXIS 2110 Network Camera up to 2.40 editcgi.cgi path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in AXIS 2110 Network Camera up to 2.40 (Network Camera Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file editcgi.cgi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Axis Network Camera 2.40 and earlier, and Video Server 3.12 and earlier, allows remote attackers to bypass authentication via a .. (dot dot) in an HTTP POST request to ServerManager.srv, then use these privileges to conduct other activities, such as modifying files using editcgi.cgi.

The bug was discovered 08/16/2004. The weakness was published 08/22/2004 by bashis (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-2426 since 08/18/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
