Opera Web Browser up to 8.54 JPEG Image denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in Opera 8.54 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a JPEG image with large height and width values, which causes less memory to be allocated than intended.

The weakness was disclosed 06/23/2006 by Chris Ries with VigilantMinds (Website). The advisory is shared at vigilantminds.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3198 since 06/23/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21786 (Opera < 9.00 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165136 (SUSE Security Update for Opera (SUSE-SA:2006:038)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at opera.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27318), Tenable (21786), SecurityFocus (BID 18594†), OSVDB (26787†) and Secunia (SA20897†). The entry VDB-31113 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
