Integer overflow in Opera 8.54 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a JPEG image with large height and width values, which causes less memory to be allocated than intended.
The weakness was disclosed 06/23/2006 by Chris Ries with VigilantMinds (Website). The advisory is shared at vigilantminds.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3198 since 06/23/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21786 (Opera < 9.00 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165136 (SUSE Security Update for Opera (SUSE-SA:2006:038)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at opera.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
