A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/XP (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component PNG Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in GIFIMP32.FLT, as used in Microsoft Office 2003 SP1 and SP2, Office XP SP3, Office 2000 SP3, and other products, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted GIF image that triggers memory corruption when it is parsed.
The bug was discovered 07/11/2006. The weakness was published 07/11/2006 by NSFocus Security Team with Fortinet as MS06-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0007 since 11/09/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2591 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 861284 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110036 (Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Filters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-039)).
Applying the patch MS06-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8414. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9167.
