Microsoft Office 2000/2003/XP GIF Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/XP (Office Suite Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component GIF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in GIFIMP32.FLT, as used in Microsoft Office 2003 SP1 and SP2, Office XP SP3, Office 2000 SP3, and other products, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted GIF image that triggers memory corruption when it is parsed.

The issue has been introduced in 06/07/1999. The weakness was shared 07/11/2006 by NSFOCUS with NSFocus Security Team as MS06-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-0007 since 11/09/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2591 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 861284 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110036 (Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Filters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-039)).

Applying the patch MS06-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8414. In this case the pattern GIF8 is used for detection.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (861284), SecurityFocus (BID 18915†), OSVDB (27146†), Secunia (SA21013†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1016470†). The entries VDB-2365 and VDB-31235 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
