A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4 (Operating System). Affected is the function smb_recv_trans2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The smb_recv_trans2 function call in the samba filesystem (smbfs) in Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 does not properly handle the re-assembly of fragmented packets correctly, which could allow remote samba servers to (1) read arbitrary kernel information or (2) raise a counter value to an arbitrary number by sending the first part of the fragmented packet multiple times.
The bug was discovered 12/01/2004. The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2005 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0949 since 10/12/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
