Details
A vulnerability was found in Carnegie Mellon University Cyrus IMAP Server up to 2.2.6. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The argument parser of the PARTIAL command in Cyrus IMAP Server 2.2.6 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a certain command ("body[p") that is treated as a different command ("body.peek") and causes an index increment error that leads to an out-of-bounds memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2004. The weakness was published 01/10/2005 by Stefan Esser with eMatters (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1012 since 11/04/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20647 (Ubuntu 4.10 : cyrus21-imapd vulnerabilities (USN-31-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3344.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18199), Tenable (20647), SecurityFocus (BID 11729†), OSVDB (12097†) and Secunia (SA13274†).
