uthenticode up to 1.x X.509 Certificate certificate validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in uthenticode up to 1.x. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component X.509 Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a certificate validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-295. The product does not validate, or incorrectly validates, a certificate. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

uthenticode is a small cross-platform library for partially verifying Authenticode digital signatures. Versions of uthenticode prior to the 2.x series did not check Extended Key Usages in certificates, in violation of the Authenticode X.509 certificate profile. As a result, a malicious user could produce a "signed" PE file that uthenticode would verify and consider valid using an X.509 certificate that isn't entitled to produce code signatures (e.g., a SSL certificate). By design, uthenticode does not perform full-chain validation. However, the absence of EKU validation was an unintended oversight. The 2.0.0 release series includes EKU checks. There are no workarounds to this vulnerability.

The weakness was disclosed 08/09/2023 as GHSA-gm2f-j4rj-6xqj. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-40012 since 08/08/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1587.003 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 2.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch caeb1eb62412605f71bd96ce9bb9420644b6db53 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
