A vulnerability was found in Cherokee httpd up to 0.4.17 (Web Server). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function cherokee_logger_ncsa_write_string. Format string vulnerability in the cherokee_logger_ncsa_write_string function in Cherokee 0.4.17 and earlier, when authenticating via auth_pam, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in the URL.
The bug was discovered 10/15/2004. The weakness was released 01/10/2005 by Florian Schilhabel (LINUX) with Gentoo Linux Security Audit Team (Website). The advisory is available at gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1097 since 11/30/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
