The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

getmail 4.x before 4.2.0, and other versions before 3.2.5, when run as root, allows local users to write files in arbitrary directories via a symlink attack on subdirectories in the maildir.

The bug was discovered 09/19/2004. The weakness was shared 01/27/2005 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com.
