A vulnerability was found in Cyrus-SASL up to 2.1.18. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Libraries. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) libsasl and (2) libsasl2 libraries in Cyrus-SASL 2.1.18 and earlier trust the SASL_PATH environment variable to find all available SASL plug-ins, which allows local users to execute arbitrary code by modifying the SASL_PATH to point to malicious programs.
The bug was discovered 10/07/2004. The weakness was published 01/27/2005 with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0884 since 09/22/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15666 (Debian DSA-568-1 : cyrus-sasl-mit - unsanitised input), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
