libtiff up to 3.6.1 integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in libtiff up to 3.6.1 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in libtiff 3.6.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash or memory corruption) via TIFF images that lead to incorrect malloc calls.

The weakness was released 01/27/2005 by Matthias Clasen as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0886 since 09/22/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15504 (FreeBSD : tiff -- multiple integer overflows (193)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117960 (CentOS Security Update for kdegraphics (CESA-2005:021)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17715), Tenable (15504), SecurityFocus (BID 11406†), Secunia (SA12818†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1011674†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-1419, VDB-1442, VDB-1441 and VDB-22364. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
