Mozilla Firefox up to 1.7.2 nsvcardobj.cpp writeGroup stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.7.2 (Web Browser) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function writeGroup of the file nsvcardobj.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the writeGroup function in nsVCardObj.cpp for Mozilla Firefox before the Preview Release, Mozilla before 1.7.3, and Thunderbird before 0.8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed VCard attachments that are not properly handled when previewing a message.

The weakness was disclosed 01/27/2005 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0903 since 09/23/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/16/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19141 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- vCard stack buffer overflow (da690355-1159-11d9-bc4a-000c41e2cdad)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17380), Tenable (19141), SecurityFocus (BID 11174†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-5432†). The entries VDB-836, VDB-839, VDB-838 and VDB-835 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
