Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.2 HTTP Header Expect-Header cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

In addition, an exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.2 (Web Server). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation of the argument Expect-Header with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

http_protocol.c in (1) IBM HTTP Server 6.0 before 6.0.2.13 and 6.1 before 6.1.0.1, and (2) Apache HTTP Server 1.3 before 1.3.35, 2.0 before 2.0.58, and 2.2 before 2.2.2, does not sanitize the Expect header from an HTTP request when it is reflected back in an error message, which might allow cross-site scripting (XSS) style attacks using web client components that can send arbitrary headers in requests, as demonstrated using a Flash SWF file.

The weakness was presented 07/25/2006 by Amit Klein with Aksecurity (Website). The advisory is shared at svn.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3918 since 07/27/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The exploit is available at secunia.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22202 (RHEL 2.1 : apache (RHSA-2006:0618)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118824 (HP-UX Apache-based Web Server Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02612)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (28424), Tenable (22202), SecurityFocus (BID 19661†), OSVDB (27488†) and Secunia (SA29640†). See VDB-2615, VDB-3489, VDB-8300 and VDB-8298 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
