Apache HTTP Server 2.x HTTP Header Request Entity cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server 2.x (Web Server). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation of the argument Request Entity with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Apache HTTP Server 2.0.x and 2.2.x does not sanitize the HTTP Method specifier header from an HTTP request when it is reflected back in a "413 Request Entity Too Large" error message, which might allow cross-site scripting (XSS) style attacks using web client components that can send arbitrary headers in requests, as demonstrated via an HTTP request containing an invalid Content-length value, a similar issue to CVE-2006-3918.

The bug was discovered 11/07/2007. The weakness was shared 12/03/2007 by Adrian Pastor Amir Azam with ProCheckUp (Website). The advisory is shared at procheckup.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-6203 since 12/03/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31445 (GLSA-200803-19 : Apache: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118824 (HP-UX Apache-based Web Server Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02612)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at procheckup.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38800), Tenable (31445), SecurityFocus (BID 26663†), OSVDB (39003†) and Secunia (SA34219†). The entries VDB-2393, VDB-2615, VDB-8300 and VDB-8298 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
