Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.3.4 (Network Authentication Software). This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The krb5-send-pr script in the kerberos5 (krb5) package in Trustix Secure Linux 1.5 through 2.1, and possibly other operating systems, allows local users to overwrite files via a symlink attack on temporary files.
The weakness was presented 02/09/2005 with Trustix (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0971 since 10/19/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16221 (RHEL 2.1 / 3 : krb5 (RHSA-2005:012)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17583), Tenable (16221), SecurityFocus (BID 11289†), OSVDB (11117†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-8285†).
